Seafood Industry
Marker #50 is home at the Port of Palacios for the largest shrimping
fleet on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Intracoastal Waterway is located
only 12 miles from this port.
The fishing industry began around 1903 with oysters and fish.
It was not until 1935 that shrimp became a commodity of value and desired
by the market. The salt water blue crab thrives in abundance while
bottle nosed dolphins grace the bay waters.
The Port of Palacios is home to a large number of fish houses
processing shrimp and oysters in season. Oysters are still dredged
or tongued much in the same way as years past.
If one doesn't work on a boat, they might be found at the port
working as cullers, headers and shuckers. It is all in the day's
catch.
