Early 1900's History

This mural brings back memories of days gone by.  Depicted in this mural are:

  • Baptist Young Peoples Union   -  Currently known as the Texas Baptist Encampment and established in 1906.  It displays an attractive arch entry way.
  • Palacios Train Depot    -    The first train arrived in Palacios in 1903 and brought prospective land buyers and drummers to sell their wares.
  • Hotel Palacios   -   Built in 1903 and still in operation.  It is currently known as "The Luther Hotel" and has 41 available rooms and cottages overlooking the bay.
  • Palm Trees   -   Each palm was planted in the 1940's, honoring soldiers of WWII from the Palacios area.  Many trees were lost in the freeze of 1985.
  • Palacios Pavilion Bath House   -   Constructed in 1904 by the same architect as the hotel.  It was heavily damaged by the hurricanes and torn down in 1934 to make room for the Roundhouse pavilion.
  • Round House Pavilion   -   This pavilion was constructed in 1935 and hosted many of the big bands of the 1940's.  It was destroyed in 1961 by Hurricane Carla.
  • Fisherman   -   Fishing began as a major industry in 1903.  Oysters and fish were the mainstay at a time when sail was the only propulsion and fish houses dotted the shoreline.
  • Oil Discovery   -   Oil was first discovered in 1901 and natural gas fires light up the skies on a nightly bases.
  • Half Moon Reef Lighthouse   -   Located on Half Moon Reef in Matagorda Bay off Palacios Point, this site was first marked in 1716 and service began in 1789. The lighthouse was built in 1854.  It ceased to operate in 1942.
